The Australian Government has announced the chairs of its Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals Growth Centre and Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Growth Centre, following the appointments of the three other Industry Growth Centre chairs last month.

Dr Bronwyn Evans will chair the Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals Growth Centre. Currently the CEO of Standards Australia, Dr Evans has extensive board experience - she is the chair of the advisory board for Robogals and a member of the Australian Technology Network of Universities, ARIIA (ATN Research Impact Industry Advisory) Board, and was formerly the chair of the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA).

Reg Nelson will meanwhile chair the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Growth Centre. With wide experience in technical, corporate and government affairs, particularly in the petroleum and mineral industries, Nelson is currently an adviser to Beach Energy and was formerly the director of Mineral Development for the state of South Australia.

They join previously announced chairs Andrew Stevens (Chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre), Elizabeth Lewis-Gray (Chair of the Mining Equipment, Technology and Services Growth Centre) and Peter Schutz (Chair of the Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre) in the $188.5 million Industry Growth Centres Initiative, which aims to build new links between businesses and researchers to boost Australian industry’s international competitiveness.

Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane has listed the Industry Growth Centres among several initiatives introduced by the government to cut red tape. Other examples included streamlining the way businesses interact with government through the Single Business Service and removing processes that create double-ups between jurisdictions.

Macfarlane claims Australian Government action to cut red tape has delivered almost $220 million to Australian businesses in the Industry and Science portfolio. He noted that his department has “developed a new webpage to … make it easier for industry to contribute to policy and program development”, which can be viewed at www.industry.gov.au/PortfolioRegulationReform
