Let the partnering begin! Biotech investment takes centre stage at Australia Biotech Invest 2014
Two days of intensive discussion at Australia Biotech Invest 2014 will commence tomorrow to highlight the innovation and positive momentum happening in the Australian life sciences sector.
The two-day conference at the Crown Conference Centre provides over 30 expert speakers and panellists, plus 30 presenting biotech companies, to more than 250 delegates from Australia’s life science investor community.
Australia’s biotechnology industry is growing steadily and its trajectory despite the global financial crisis (GFC) has made it one of the standout performers in the national economy. A recent Scientific American survey of the international biotechnology industry ranked Australia fourth among industrialised nations for biotechnology innovation.
Dr Anna Lavelle, the CEO of AusBiotech, said: “For a long time, the GFC chilled speculative investment and people looked for safe options. But they now recognise the need to diversify their portfolios, and see investment in the life sciences as a key component because the sector’s fundamentals have been so consistently robust.
“Our biotechnology industry’s export performance has been flying low, fast and quietly under the radar. Our biopharmaceutical exports have grown to more than $4 billion annually, substantially greater than either the wine and automotive industries, which have a high public profile.
“The industry has become more mature and sophisticated in the past half-decade, with a much better understanding of capital markets, and of what today’s investors want,” she said.
