It may sound like the spiel of a snake-oil salesman, but the story behind the development of a new Australian product derived from an extract of pawpaw (Carica papaya) designed to promote wound healing is a compelling one. The Australian company behind it, Phoenix Eagle, has developed a new product, OPAL A, that could revolutionise wound healing and wound care.

The story is an unusual one to say the least, but in the company’s favour is the quality of the people it has managed to get on board. Not only does it have local and international specialists as advisors, but it has managed to recruit one of Australia’s best known wound management experts, Associate Professor Michael Woodward of the University of Melbourne’s School of Medicine, and past-president of the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA), to run its early phase clinical trial at the Heidelberg Repat, based at the Austin Hospital.

A clinician as well as a researcher, Michael Woodward admits to being a bit sceptical about the story when he first heard it. “Whenever anybody says a vegetable extract does miraculous things, the first reaction of a doctor is to be a little bit doubtful,” he says. “That’s not because we are all in the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry and only believe in expensive drugs, it’s just because many claims have been made about foods and vitamins in the past that have not been proven once they’ve been subjected to the light of evidence.”

But, having witnessed some remarkable results after the product was used to treat pressure ulcers at Perth’s Quadriplegic Centre, he has come on board. Woodward is now looking for evidence that OPAL A does indeed promote wound healing, running a blinded, randomised placebo-controlled trial of the product in people with hard-to-heal venous and pressure ulcers. The candidates will receive either a placebo or a treatment with OPAL A filtrate, applied directly to the wound, as well as a 30 per cent-strength cream applied to the surrounding area.

Only those who are not responding to regular therapy will be recruited, Woodward says. “We don’t want a new product that is no better than what we have already. For that reason we have everybody treated for four weeks with regular therapy and then at the end of that four-week period they only get into the study proper if their ulcer hasn’t healed by 25 per cent of the surface area,” he says.

“The good thing, if it turns out to be effective, is that it is a totally Australian invention that most people will feel comfortable with,” Woodward says. “A lot of people are more comfortable putting something that is taken from pawpaw on their wound than something that has been developed in a test tube with genetic modification.”

Patented process

The story behind the product’s discovery is a compelling, if slightly unusual. The inventor, Tom McArthur, has no scientific training but has been responsible for a number of inventions. According to Phoenix Eagle’s managing director, Mark Richardson, McArthur has been interested in the therapeutic properties of fruits and vegetables for many years. This was rekindled when he was in the British army based in Malaya in the 1950s.

He spent many years experimenting and finally came up with a way to extract a filtrate from the pulp of the fruit by heating it and adding sodium bicarbonate. Many different fruits and vegetables can be used in this process, but pawpaw looked the most promising. The company has taken out a global patent application on the process, the products derived from the process and the uses of these products, and has filed this application in the major global markets.

It was the cosmetic applications that first sparked McArthur’s interest, but the more important application, for the healing of chronic wounds, came about by chance, says Richardson. McArthur began to treat an acquaintance who had an ulcerous toe that had become necrotic and had been scheduled for amputation, having already lost three others. The treatment, which was videoed, was successful and the patient kept his toe. Another patient, confined to a wheelchair and suffering from a large ulcer on his hip and a hard scar on his buttock, was also successfully treated. Then, Richardson received a phone call from the director of nursing at the Quadriplegic Centre in WA, where the product was unexpectedly being trialled by one of the nursing staff, with excellent results.

GREAT.....so yet another generous contribution to modern medicine by an unassuming gentlemen has been hijacked by the corporate cronies, who sounds like have rushed off with his un-patented invention/discovery, and patented it themselves to make a fortune.

Here he is giving it away for free to help the disabled/needy, and all these companies can think about is making it ALL THEIRS. Anyone doubt this, look at the story of PENNICILLIN. Created by generous british/australian scientists who planned for it to be free for all, and then hi-jacked by an american pharmaceutical company and patented. (then the inventors had to BUY it back because of the patent).

I live in Brisbane, I myself have bad psorasis and it has started to take over my face. I have two boys 9 & 6 with severe eczema... One of which is now on a cemotheropy tablet to try and help with the severity of the eczema. Nothing works , burning / stinging and lots of greasy creams do not work.... What a great story and what an inspirational man. My husband has four ulcers on his feet which have been there for ages. He has had one wound or another on his feet for the last 5 years due to diabetes. We both watched and he would love to be a candidate for the trial. Doctors have told him about 6 times that they should cut off his toes, but he's still trying to keep them.

Dear Mr.McArthur , Is opti Derma the same as the opal A product that you make, . It is to be made available on the 2 5th october. There is also papyia cream in the chemist already as a cosmetic application. Is it the same as what you make because I would rather your product then the big pharmacy companies that are to make a mint out of your product. At least your product would be guaranteed to have the correct ingredients in it not like the pharmacy produced products as one would never know what else they add to make it their own product. I work as an aged care nurse and anything to help the patients with their ulcers would be a God send as the regular doctor prescribed medications do not work.

Tom I watched your demonstration with great interest, the results were remarkable.
I am writing on behalf of my sister who is eighty years old and was badly burnt on her legs
in a house fire four months ago, she has recovered but left with bad scaring and discoloration
some areas are still open and have not sealed .She still suffers the feeling of the burn

The wild reaction to Tom's PRODUCT reflects the lack of effective treatments for a range of conditions and inadequate accessibility of effective treatments THAT DO EXIST (for example because of poor GP education or practice). It also reflects a lack of consumer sophistication to recognise marketing when they see it.

So where there is unmet need, the reaction to a promise of meeting that need will be an overwhelming overreaction which attributes incredible efficacy and breadth of application to the PRODUCT.

Tom is playing on people's hope for a cure for what ails them. It is standard marketing practice to offer your product for free to demonstrate it and develop a consumer following. The Today Tonight campaign was part of that. From here on in, this PRODUCT is a money spinner until people realise it's no good for what ails them.

Any treatment is going to need specific conditions to be satisfied in order to be effective as a cure. The PRODUCT may appear to be a cure but in fact only give remission. The remission may or may not be sustainable and may or may not be repeatable with subsequent treatment.

My guess is this PRODUCT probably works by blocking some part of the inflammatory response of the cascade of immune reactions that occur in respons to some 'insult', infective or otherwise. That would explain the breadth of application of the PRODUCT. This normal cascade of reactions can be counterproductive under some situations, or infective agents could effectively adapt to it. Tom's product could effectively be a 'fix' for that design defect in the imune response.

If you interfere with the normal immune cascade, you could buy the immune system enough time to clean up the site where the insult has occurred. That would give you a cure. But if the insult is an infective agent which is highly adaptive, you will only win a brief remission which you may or may not be able to sustain with further treatments with Tom's PRODUCT. Your immune system also has alternate reaction pathways and it can learn to override an intentional curative blocking of part of the immune cascade.

So people, take a cold shower before you let elderly gentlemen with a good sense for marketing, take you to the cleaners with your hopes high in your breast.

Such an extraordinary reaction to such a lame story in a society where medical care is basically free, tells us something more important than the PRODUCT. It tells us GP's aren't doing their job very well. And it tells us that patients are not sophisticated consumers of medical products and supplements. That spells mucho dollario for the health supplements industry. And not much more than that.

I am hoping that I might be able to purchase your product 'Opal A' as featured on 'Today Tonight' . I am hoping think this may help my father. His skin is constantly breaking down with numerous courses of antibiotics having failed to stop it. His hands are swollen with large open cracks in the skin which just won't heal. He is diabetic and under the care of wonderful doctors, but they are at a loss to the cause or a cure of his skin condition. He nearly goes spare with the constant itch and severe pain. I haven't been able to track down a supplier of 'Opal A' via the net ... if possible I would like to purchase the same product which was shown to be such a success for others featured in the show last night. With all the blessings from a multitude of people you are well on the way to Sainthood. I have been praying a long time for a natural cure for arthritis, skin lesions and severe cellulite. Wow and God answered me through you!

Tom my poor mother in law has suffered from rheumatoid and osteo arthritis for the last 20 years. She can barely move and can't even dress herself 80% of the time. She has tried so many different tablets and creams that her doc. gave her and now she is worse off plus her immune system is weakened.

I have blood lesions/blisters over my body and suffer from severe cellulite (just from knees to groin) - . If you have seen pictures of elephantism caused by parasites when bitten by a particular mosquito --- then that is what the top part of my legs look like. Slim or overweight my legs are the same.

it is amazing how you selflessly go about helping people improve their illness and of course their quality of life. Perhaps you might also be able to help me. i have been diagnosed with sero neg arthritis/psoriatc arthritis with chronic inflmmatory issues in both of my knees. Over the last ten years or more this disease has taken away any quality of life I had, and has caused emotional trauma. (I use to be very active and i use to play basketball five night a week). I find it very difficult to to manage my daily activities and I recently had a radioactive isotope injected into one of my knees to assist in the reduction of the amount of fluid and inflammation I have surrounding my knees. i am so fed up with trying "western drugs"' that do very little. I have struggled for years and years with cellulite and I heard what your potions can do. It upsets me greatly. I just had my first child at the age of 40, which took 6 years to make (IVF and the works). My life hasn't been easy of late and we are lucky now to have a little miracle daughter.

I am now depressed because of my appearance, especially on my legs. I so wish to take my daughter to her swimming lesson but can't bear to get into swimmers because of how I look. I don't even like my husband looking at me naked.

HI Tom, thanks for your heart for OTHERS. My mother told me many years ago that the Papuan's always ate paw paw when they had upset stomachs because it would act as a natural anti inflammatory. When I saw the miracle that you have worked on using paw paw, I became convicted of it's healing properties. What a great story of your invention. I congratulate you and wish you every success in your excellent business of helping people.
Having read all the comments I decided to write the following as there are soo many sufferers of psoriasis.
I am in possesion of a very good remedy for the psoriasis sufferers and can make the life of diabetes 2 sufferers much better. I have invented this remedy one year ago. It is made of milk and so if you have an allergy to milk then I cannot help at all. It helped so many people but I cannot patent it as I need a lot of money to do it. And without the patent I cannot start anything.
I am quite willing to try to help anyone who contacts me for free provided that the person will let me document on video and on paper the results even if they are all negative (but I am sure they all will come positive). My remedy is also a very good helper for the people with broken bones that will not cure well. If Australian Life Scientist wishes to see the results or interview me - I am ready for that. Please note that currently I live in UK and I realise that it might be a problem.

I was interested to hear Tom call his invention Liquid Gold. Just after he shows his extract and names it Liquid Gold, the voice over calls it Opal A. Several times during the feature, Tom refers to Liquid Gold and at no time does he call it Opal A. Only the voice over calls it Opal A. It appears that those responsible for the feature were trying to pass Toms credibility over to the marketing of another product. My understanding is that Toms product is not available yet, but I for one, will be waiting until Toms product is available to purchase from the man himself, Tom McArthur.

Every now and then we hear and see a story on air that really restores our faith in mankind.You have certainly done that for me.And I'm writting to you is to say thank you and God Bless and keep you around for many more years.
Is your product good for diabetics,Iam sick and tired of injecting twice daily and numerous tablets for numerous ailments that come on to us just by being a diabetic for 25 yrs now.I know that there are young children out there with the same illness and I shouldn't complain.But Iam downright plum tired and at times I feel like giving up.I had a nasty fall down the stairs 3 yrs ago I was 64 yrs young now I feel 67 years old. I have pains all over my body,neuropathy of the legs and as a result of the diabetics.I can hardly get out of the chair in a dignyfied manner and this upsets me to the point where I feel embarrassed to go anywhere. I saw you on Today Tonight and was riveted by their coverage of you.
What an amazing man you are, not because of your invention of the miracle cream but the fact that you refused to be bought out by the Pharmaceutical company. I think your high morals overode the greed that man tends to be tempted by. It brought tears to my eyes that you were only honouring your beautiful wife's memory.
I would dearly love to know how I can get your cream as my husband suffers badly from osteoarthritis in his joints. He is only 57yrs old but I know it has been a common problem in his family. He has already had 1 hip replacement and his doctor has said that the other hip will also need to be done. He walks religiously every morning before work but this morning he phoned me on his mobile to come and get him in the car. He was only a 5 minute walk away from home. I have seen him over the years endure pain like this but when I picked him up this morning, it broke my heart.
I know there is always someone worse off than you but I hope my story will touch your heart.

You certainly are skeptical, but perhaps with some measure of justification if your credentials are as you say.

I looked closely at Tom McArthur's Magical Mystery Tour last year when "Optiderma" was his agent. They used the same "Send money now for an advance order to be shipped sometime in the future" story, but no-one ever received the "Tom McArthur" products they paid for. Only "Optiderma" substitutes.

Now Tom McArthur has completely divorced himself from "Optiderma" and gone solo, but he still has no products to ship. The latest quick jump from "I'm helping people out of the goodness of my heart." to "Send me money now for an advance order to be shipped in May." brings on a profound feeling of deja vu. Into whose pocket does this "Liquid Gold" flow?

Obese people are always looking for the miracle cure and they are scammed for millions of dollars every month by disgusting specimens who offer phony weight loss treatments, but offering hope to people with incurable medical conditions is infinitely more disgusting.

I have had psoriasis for more than 50 years. I know damn well it is incurable. Tom McArthur ignored my email last year. Perhaps he also knows damn well it's incurable.

If it looks like snake oil and feels like snake oil and smells like snake oil then it's almost certainly snake oil.

I received my order 10 days ago. Since then I have not had to take any medication for my arthritis.

Doubters, check your facts before you post. The product has only just been released and as there is such a huge demand, there is about a 6 week wait time for deliveries. If you haven't tried it, don't knock it.To me, it's a miracle. Thanks Tom! I've even reordered.

Hi Tom , about to order your products and give them a go .. honestly what have i got to loose? money is nothing when it comes to suffering right!... i wish it was free for the people who can't afford this .. maybe there could be a discount on pensioners or the unwell... I have suffered with psoriasis since i was 19 i am now 48 .. from time to time i break out the worst being winter and has never really dissapeared at all .. its in patches all over my body including ears and scalp ... I had to stop working at an early age due to the irritation and pain i suffer ... i also cant use anything that's not unnatural including cleaning products ... my liver is now suffering from this and i have been from time to time in hospital because of the pain it causes me along with being unwell.. i have six children and 6 grandchildren and i want to be around to see them all grow up a little more .. I am willing to give your treatments a go regardless of it costing me money ... anyone that has something negative to say about this i guess you haven't really suffered enough to no how badly people around this world have to deal with it day to day ... because when u do suffer you would give anything a try before judging and its hope for many people ...This man (Tom) has had to have hope for along time to of done whats hes done and to that 'im thankful for him trying.

We received our order about 2 weeks ago. Our family has many different conditions. My condition is dermititis on my hands. Iv been using the cream twice a day and have noticed a change! It hasn't completely gone yet but it is helping alot. My mum has a sore back and also shooting pain in her arm. The cream has helped with her arm, no more shooting pain but hasn't helped her back. My baby of only 3 months had red spots on her face (like little pimples) the first time I used the cream they started to fade. The cream hasn't irritated anyone's skin even my 3 month old is completely fine! I would recommend this cream to anyone!!!

I suffered for two years from seb/dermatitis on my face and scalp. Ive been using the cream for roughly a month now and it has completely cleared the dermatitis from these areas. My skin feels alot smoother and the burning sensations have completely gone. I can't fault this cream. I've even placed a second order.

I have just placed my third order. It's brilliant. Unbelievable. Faded my birthmark by about 70%. Helping with scarring, great moisturiser, reduced a mole by half, reduces size of skin tags. Takes redness out of skin. Most of all, it allows my husband and mum to sleep thru the night without pain from osteoarthritis. I have ordered for relatives and now have reordered for myself. Almost halfway through first skin cream and been using for a month now day and night - 2 people using it. Seriously amazing. You would be mad to not give it a try.

....i forgot to mention it also works on cellulite and fluid retentive areas, although you would need to use long term for optimum results. Smoothes the skin improving the appearance. Noticed an improvement after 1 week.

I have used Tom's cream, facial cream and soap. I suffer from from Psoriasis...for over 40 years; and over the last 12 months it has become so itchy it has been keeping me awake...driving me nuts! the first time I used the cream it cut the itch by at least 90%. My skin was also improving in texture. I have seborrhoeic dermatitis on my face. The face cream clears it. The only problem is that my psoriasis is so widespread that I used 90% of the body cream in one week. I can't afford to be paying $45 a week, so I have stopped using it. My skin has gone back to being itchy and inflamed. This is the only product that has ever stopped the itch...cortisone cream helps to reduce the scaliness but doesn't help the itch one bit. Can actually make it worse! I am going to try the Optiderma product as its cheaper, but if it doesn't work I will be going back to Tom's product. It DOES work! Knockers...try it before you denigrate it.

Hi, I suffer from very itchy scalp sores, red rash that appears on the calves and also on my lower back. I like most people who watched the TodayTonight shows thought I can finally get some relief with this magic cream or as Tom writes on the container LIQUID GOLD.

3 Fish oil tablets X 3.
4 Tom McArthurs complete skin care cream twice a day
The above has had NO effect [ IMPROVEMENT] on the above problems I wake in the middle of the night and wish I could scratch the hell out of my scalp calves and back. I have been using Tom McArthurs cream since May 2011. Tried to contact the Today Tonight Show to see if they would do follow up stories form people who puchased the product after their promotion NO REPLY . I am disappointed in the cream [to say the least] and frustrated that Today Tonight will not talk to people who may have been influenced into buying the products because of the Today Tonight stories.By the way the cream has had no effect on dry facial skin or aches and pains

I developed pomhpolyx on my hand after a hip replacement. I am 64 and have never had any allergies in my life before. After trying steroid creams and many different treatments from my doctors. nothing worked, However after trying the Mc Arthur cream for a month, the skin on my hands is so much better. I can hold out my hand for change when shopping without feeling embarrassed, as I did before. They looked awful. All I can say is THANK YOU SO MUCH for this wonderful cream.

Got the product last night and it really does work. My daughter's best friend has severe eczema and washing with the soap and applying the cream has stopped the itch and her skin is starting to heal. she is grateful. I used the soap to shave and I have NO rash, anywhere. And my acne is reducing. I am trialling it on my tummy tuck scar and cellulite and will record my results. My daughter's acne is also much improved after one day. My son's eczema is also improved and his arthritic knee is feeling better. These are my results. This product should be listed on the PBS to reduce costs for those who desperately need it. I suppose if a supermodel recommends it for cellulite removal, it would attract international acclaim. Next day update. For me the soap is the only soap to shave with. It is helping to get rid of scaly skin on my legs. I will also use the cream to see more improvement. And No skin rash, underarms, bikini, nowhere. Further, I lathered up and added a spoonful of sugar to make a skin scrub and I will throw out my usual scrub for this. Try it. My skin is silky smooth with no ill effect. Scrubs are so expensive and using just the rich soap lather, is cost effective. But actually works.McArthurs natural product does really work. Again can someone in authority please schedule this on the PBS as it is so versatile. And people are hurting whilst we are waiting.

Just received the product after waiting a few months. Had a need to try on hand I had injured last night. woke up with wrist paining to all movements. Used the cream and, without the word of a lie, within less than 3 minutes the pain had disappeared. Tried on my knee next, which is always a bit stiff and sore when I first get up. bingo it worked again.
thanks Tom and I am onto a winner I think.
Still to try soap and face cream.

I hope you get this message Tom. Thanks so much for the products :) I've been using the soap and face cream on my face for acne and scarring and I love it! My face is really clear and I hardly ever get pimples any more. My surface scars, like red blotchy ones and pigmentation, have almost completely gone! I feel so much more comfortable without makeup on now and my skin looks healthier.

I have been using the cream and have found some mild improvements but nothing like most people that have come forward to share there stories of healing.
I have a large staphylococcus scar on each of my lower legs they are a little lighter in color since using the cream but nothing like some peoples claims of cure.
I would like to try Opal A as i think this might help with my issue other than the moisturizing cream and soap im using now..

Does anyone know when this Opal A will be released.?
